ONE MORE WEEK!!!
I am looking forward to a festive last week of school before the holidays!
This week we will be continuing a lot of concepts we started last week.
Reading- we will be reading from our StoryWorks magazines and focusing on narrative fiction.
*Please make sure your child is reading over the break, our AR goals are due in about a month!*
Writing-Mrs. Hartwig and I will continue our instruction on Personal Narrative writing. Your child will begin writing the body of their personal narratives. Most of your children have chosen very entertaining topics to write about!
Math-we will be continuing with multiplying decimals. I will give the students a small quiz over the process of multiplying decimals before the break to ensure understanding. I'll be sure to return these before Friday.
On Friday, my Reading class will be having a holiday breakfast celebration. I handed out forms to go home this past Friday. If you and your child are interested in participating and bringing something to share, please fill out the form and return it to school with your child.
We will complete our Spelling and Vocabulary quizzes as usual and enjoy the movie, Polar Express.
During 7th hour, the students will be attending an assembly to watch some staff members play the 8th grade boys basketball team in a game.
*If your child has ANY zeros in the grade-book on Friday, he/she will not be participating in the assembly and will instead work on this missing homework during this time.*
Have a wonderful and safe holiday season! Enjoy this time with your friends and family.
Mr. Wood and I will be opening the envelope to tell us is we are having a boy or a girl on Christmas morning! I look forward to sharing!

12/9-12/13
Good morning! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
This week in reading we will be watching The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and working out of our Storyworks magazines. Our focus will be narrative nonfiction.
In writing we are beginning to write personal narratives. Please ask your child what they plan on writing their paper on- it should be an event in their lives that stirs up a lot of emotion! While writing these papers, we will continue our focus on description.
In math, we are moving to operations with decimals. They will take their pretest today and we will begin adding and subtracting decimals tomorrow. It will be nice to take a break from fractions! :)
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Winter is here- enjoy it the best you can!

Welcome December! 12/2-12/6
We have a busy week this week! The students have a half day on Thursday and Friday this week. School will be dismissed at 10:55 both days. I am looking forward to meeting all of you at parent/teacher conferences!
Math- We will be continuing our instruction on dividing fractions. The students will have a quiz on both multiplying and dividing fractions on Wednesday. We will then move to decimal operations.
Reading- We will finish up our Holocaust Literature Circles this week. Our main focus is comparing and contrasting between the three different books the students are reading. They will take the AR quiz on Thursday and we will watch the movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas on Thursday and Friday. This video is rated PG-13. If you would like more information on the movie, please follow this link, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0914798/. Let me know if you would prefer your child NOT to watch this video. One of our common core standards is to compare/contrast between text and video on the same topic. This is a very powerful movie that, unlike the books in our literature circles, is based on a German boy around the age of my students. I feel this is a very good way for students to see how people from both sides of the Holocaust were effected.
Writing- I am very excited to have Mrs. Powell into our classroom this week during writing. She is going to review and teach many technology concepts that will get our students ready for when we adopt the chrome books in January. This is a very exciting opportunity for our students.
I will be sending home a reminder with your conference day and time on Monday or Tuesday this week.
As always, please email me with any concerns or questions!
Thank you,
Mrs. Wood

Happy Monday! I hope everyone made it through those crazy storms yesterday with no damage!
We have a great week planned in our classroom!
Reading- We are beginning Holocaust Literature Circles this week. I have placed your child in a group with a book fit for their reading level. Each book is written about the Holocaust from the perspective of a Jewish child about your child's age. This is a very serious and sad topic that we will brush the surface of. I understand the age of your children and will make sure that what we discuss in class is age appropriate. Please take the time to discuss any questions or concerns your child may have about the Holocaust, as I will in class.
Writing- We will continue with descriptive writing this week! I can't wait to read the wonderful pieces your children wrote about my dog Riley! They really seemed to enjoy having him in class! By the end of the week, we will be discussing 'types of sentences' and creating Turkeys for Thanksgiving!
Math- We will continue with multiplying fractions this week and introduce dividing fractions. Today, we will review reducing fractions because I have noticed a little lapse in this concept. Please make sure your child is fluent with their multiplication facts at home. Use flash cards for 10 minutes a night until you feel they know them well. I am noticing a lot of counting on fingers.
As always, if you have any questions or concern, please email me at tara.wood@mybedford.us.
Thank you and have a fantastic week!

Happy November!
I hope you all had a restful, long weekend.
This week in Reading we will be focusing on Non fiction articles. The students will be taking the Star Reading test to check their current reading level and they will also be choosing their AR goals for the 2nd quarter. Please make sure your child is reading every night for at least 15 minutes.
In writing, we will be working with the mobile labs in our classroom and getting acclimated with a program called Edmodo. It is an educational site that I will be integrating into each subject I teach! It is just another preparation for when we get our chrome books in January!!!!
In math, we will continue with ratio, rate, and unit rate. The students will also learn to solve proportions through cross multiplication. They will have a QUIZ on Friday, November 8th, over this material.
As always, feel free to contact me anytime with any questions.
