Dialogue Lesson

The students had to cut out sentences, punctuation, and dialogue tags and piece them together to form appropriate sentences!  I am hoping they will be adding fantastic dialogue to their personal narrative essays we will write next week!

Hello November!!

I apologize that I missed a week or two!

We have been doing some great things in the classroom and I am thoroughly enjoying having your children in my class!

Next week are parent/teacher conferences and I look forward to meeting all of you who signed up!  If you don't feel a conference is necessary at this time, but have a few questions, please feel free to email me anytime!! tara.wood@mybedford.us

We are multiplying fractions in math!  This entails A LOT of steps for one problem so if your child is having difficulty, please refer them to their math notes.  They have step-by-step notes to take them through a problem!

We began writing personal narratives in writing and we are also working on dialogue!  Punctuating dialogue is a tough task, but we had a fun lesson with it today!  I will post pictures of some of the students and their work!

In reading, we have been focusing on nonfiction text.  Some topics we have covered are the civil war, Alexander Graham Bell, Employment, and cake!  The students received their new AR goal for the 2nd quarter.  Please be sure your child is reading EVERY night for at least 30 minutes!

Next week,  your children have a Veteran's Day assembly on Tuesday, a half day on Wednesday, a half day on Thursday and a full day on Friday.

10/13-10/17

Happy Monday!  It looks like it is going to be a rainy week.

In math, we are reviewing percents and will have a quiz on Wednesday!  Your child will need to know how to go from fraction to decimal to percent.  They will also need to know that percent means out of 100 and how to shade that on a hundreds grid.  Everything your child has been doing in class and for homework the last week can be used to study for the quiz.  Thursday, we will begin rate, ratio, and proportions.

In writing, we are continuing descriptive writing.  I will bring my German Shorthaired Pointer into writing class on Thursday so the students can write a descriptive piece on him.  His name is Riley and he has been coming to class with me a couple times a year for 7 years!  He loves kids.  The children write better than ever when they have the object right in front of them as they write and when the object is exciting!

In Reading, we will be finishing up the novel, Hatchet, and watching the movie on Thursday and Friday.  Please be sure your child is striving to make their AR goal.  Hatchet is worth 7 points, if they answer all the questions correctly.  AR and the quarter end on October 30th.

Please also continue to check HAC and be sure your child is turning in all of their assignments!

Have a great week :)

Happy March!!!

This is a bittersweet month for me!  I will be welcoming my daughter at the end of this month, but I am sad to leave this class.  I have built a wonderful relationship with each and every student of mine and I will miss them very much when I leave.  I am not due until March 29th so I am hoping I have four more weeks with your lovely children :)

This week:
Reading- We will continue reading Watsons Go To Birmingham
Writing- We will begin our body paragraphs of our opinion papers today and hopefully finish those up by next week.
Math- We will continue with graphs and data.  Today I am introducing Blox Plots.

Please continue to check HAC every couple days to be sure your child is staying on track and completing all assignments.  If you are not sure of your username and password, please call the office at 734-850-6200, they would be happy to give you that information.

February 3-February 7th

Welcome to February!  Do you think we will get a full week of school in this week?  I am skeptical:)
When your child has a snow day, PLEASE make sure they are completing all homework they may have at home and also they are taking at least 20-30 minutes to read an AR book.

This week we will be starting some fun activities!
Reading- The students will be working on African American History Literacy Centers.  February is black history month and I am giving the students background knowledge to begin our next novel, The Watson's Go To Birmingham. (It is my favorite!)  Also make sure your child is studying their spelling and vocabulary each night to prepare for the quiz on Friday.
Writing- We are turning in our personal narratives today and beginning the genre of opinion and persuasive writing.
Math- The students will take a 2nd semester pretest and we will continue with percent operations.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back after a wonderful 3 weeks off of school!  I hope you all had wonderful holidays and enjoyed being 'snowed in'!  I enjoyed the time off with family and preparing the nursery for our little GIRL!  Stella Lee is due March 29th and we are very excited!
This is the last full week before our quarter comes to an end.  Please make sure your child is completing ALL of their work and checking it over to ensure the best possible grades.
We have a lot of exciting things going on this week!
Wednesday the students will be meeting with Mrs. Johnson to discuss their options for registering for the 7th grade.  (Crazy how fast things are moving!)  During this meeting, Mrs. Johnson will inform them of their options for electives next year.  They will receive paperwork to bring home to you to fill out for next year.  Please discuss these options with your child and determine what will work best for him/her.  Turn these papers back in as soon as possible, these elective courses will fill up on a first come first serve basis.
Friday the students will receive their chrome books!  This is an extremely exciting thing for all of us!.  Please be sure you have completed the necessary paperwork so your child is able to receive his/hers.  If you need copies of the paperwork, your child can pick these up in the office.
As for curriculum:
Reading- we will focus on AR goals and reaching them through silent reading time in class.  They only have 5 more school days to complete this.  Remember, AR IS A PART OF THEIR READING GRADE!  Please be sure your child is reading every night at home for about 20 minutes.
Writing- we will continue with our personal narratives.  They will be writing the introductory paragraph today, conclusion tomorrow, and self and peer edit the rest of the week.  We will use our chrome books to type these out next week!
Math- today we are reviewing adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals.  I want to make sure they remember what they learned before this extended break happened! :)
We will also be diving whole numbers and decimals.  Their semester assessment will be taken on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.  This will cover everything we have learned this year!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at tara.wood@mybedford.us

Thank you,
